I’m madly in love with Lionshead, crazy passionately nuts about it. For me this is one of the absolute best things to do in Cape Town. I think I’ve probably climbed it 100 times and it never ever gets old. However, after a night consuming copious amounts of Pravada Vodka, followed by some dancing on tables…..Let’s just say I was in need of an energy boost. Enter Cintron Energy Drink, without it I would have never made it to the top. Available in Pineapple, Cranberry, Mango and Original, this delicious liquid contains B5, B6 and B12 – vitamins our bodies need after a night of over-indulgence. But yes, where was I? Lions Head, there was just something about her, it wasn’t her beauty, although she is flipping gorgeous, she has an energy, something undefinable – I almost feel as if my batteries are being recharged on that mountain, even though I’m actually expending massive amounts of energy just getting to the top. That is also exactly why this is such a great work out – she constantly challenges you. It’s up to you how hard you push it but you’re driven to get a better time. I still can’t run up, in fact the first initial ascent makes my legs burn every single time.
Did I mention the view from the top? Unreal, unbelievable, unforgettable. Climb and watch the sunrise before breakfast – what other city has a mountain you can climb before breakfast? It’s a killer way to start the day I promise you.
One last thing I love about her, the descent…you see when you’re climbing down a mountain – even one as relatively easy as this, you have to be engaged – maximum attention. You focus solely on where your feet are going next and that is immensely calming for a chaotic mind such as my own. It’s almost like a meditation I suppose.
So the factual stuff: 669m high, the hike from the base takes between 1 – 2 hours depending on fitness. The route is easy to follow, well trodden! You can either climb up “the chains” (not great for those with limited mobility, fear of heights or walking with dogs) or take the longer route which connects slightly higher up the mountain. Some people can do it in under 30 minutes! Not me, not yet….ummm what else, take your Cintron Energy Drink, take water, be aware of the weather; it can get chilly up there quickly – CT is a little bit crazy like that. The walk around the base is also beautiful and great for trail runners. Crime-wise I take pepper spray with me, don’t climb alone unless it’s busy….don’t look like an obvious tourist….the usual.
